Debian Server Support

Debian stable on a VPS. Bookworm in production, not testing.

HestiaCP is often installed on Debian. We keep apt, unattended-upgrades and the network config that the cloud image actually uses. A jump to testing is not a maintenance task.

What differs from Ubuntu

No netplan by default. A slower, stricter upgrade.

Bookworm

Debian 12 is the release we install and keep. Debian 11 can be repaired. A new server should not start on it. Older than that is a migration onto Bookworm, not a patch.

Network

ifupdown or systemd-networkd, depending on the image. An Ubuntu-style netplan edit on Debian does nothing. We use the provider console if a bad change dropped SSH.

Dist-upgrade

Point release updates are normal. A move from Bullseye to Bookworm waits on a snapshot and a check that Hestia or DirectAdmin supports the new release.

Hestia on Debian

The panel installer assumes a clean stable release

A Hestia box that was later switched to testing will fail the next panel update. We put it back on stable, or we say the panel has to be rebuilt. We do not keep a mixed apt sources list because one package was missing.

€55 an hour. A new Debian VPS setup starts at €149.

Minimum 1 hour. The setup includes SSH, firewall, the web stack and a backup job. A dist-upgrade is agreed separately, after the snapshot exists.
