Independent Scaleway Administration

A shared responsibility model — we cover your half

Scaleway describes a shared responsibility model: once an Instance is provisioned, you’re responsible for managing and securing the virtual machine, its data, backups and configuration. DirektSupport provides that Linux administration layer — updates, SSH, firewall, NGINX/Apache, PHP-FPM, MySQL/MariaDB, Redis, email, DNS, SSL, control panels, WordPress, backups — while your resources stay directly in your own Scaleway account.

Server Types We Support

Instances or Elastic Metal

Scaleway Instances

Websites, WordPress hosting, databases, business applications, development environments and independent web infrastructure.

setup & hardeningweb stackWordPress
Elastic Metal

Dedicated physical infrastructure for workloads needing dedicated resources, higher performance or more isolation.

multi-sitedatabasesstorage-intensive

New server? We prepare it for production — hostname, SSH, firewall, hardening, web/DB stack, SSL, DNS, control panel, backups — around the actual workload.

Control Panels on Scaleway

HestiaCP, DirectAdmin or cPanel & WHM

HestiaCP

Manage multiple websites, databases and email accounts from a single server.

DirectAdmin

Installation, CustomBuild — useful for multi-domain environments needing a complete hosting interface.

cPanel & WHM

Server prep, installation, WHM configuration — OS compatibility, resources and licensing reviewed first.

Scaleway-Specific Infrastructure

The tools unique to Scaleway’s platform

Security Groups

Define inbound/outbound policies by protocol, port and source, filtering public traffic to Instances. Traffic inside Private Networks may need firewall configuration directly on the Instance. We layer Security Groups with UFW, iptables, nftables and Fail2Ban — Scaleway itself recommends key-based SSH, restrictive rules and regular updates as best practice.

Rescue Mode

Available for both Instances and Elastic Metal — boots into a temporary network-based Linux environment for troubleshooting the installed system without relying on it. Scaleway specifically documents it for faulty kernels, networking problems and firewall misconfiguration.

KVM-over-IP (Elastic Metal)

Many Elastic Metal offers include remote KVM access, letting us interact with the physical server even when the OS isn’t functioning — useful for boot troubleshooting, custom OS installs, network problems and kernel issues.

Snapshots & Block Storage

Scaleway explicitly states in its shared responsibility documentation that a snapshot should not be treated as a permanent backup. We follow the same principle — useful before upgrades or migrations, never the only copy. We also handle the Linux side of Block Storage: partitioning, filesystem creation, mounting, /etc/fstab and migration between volumes.

Boot & Kernel Troubleshooting

When an update leaves the server unable to start

OS or kernel updates can occasionally break boot. Using Rescue Mode, we investigate boot failures, kernel problems, incorrect /etc/fstab, firewall mistakes and network configuration — mounting disks, recovering configuration and website/database files, and creating an emergency backup before any reinstall.

Where valuable data is still accessible, we protect it before attempting any potentially destructive repair.

WordPress & WooCommerce on Scaleway

More control than shared hosting

WooCommerce especially creates far more PHP, database and background activity — we look at PHP-FPM workers, MySQL/MariaDB, Redis, RAM, CPU and cron activity before increasing resources.

Email & Reverse DNS

Reputation matters as much as the mail server itself

We support Exim, Postfix, Dovecot, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, PTR records and mail queues. Scaleway supports reverse DNS configuration for Instances, which matters when a server sends email — we investigate both the Linux mail server and the DNS/authentication/reputation configuration around it.

Migrating to Scaleway

Coming from another provider? We handle websites, WordPress, databases, email, DNS, SSL, control panels and configuration.

Migrating Away From Scaleway

Independence works both ways — if it no longer fits, we help move elsewhere. If it’s working well, keeping and optimising it may be the better call.

Troubleshooting

Linux/application issue, or infrastructure issue?

Scaleway’s own guidance for Elastic Metal includes checking connectivity, routing, SSH keys, firewall configuration and server operating mode — we follow the same layered approach.

Compromised Server Support

Careful investigation, not just deleting files

We review suspicious processes, SSH and admin access, malicious cron jobs, WordPress files and malware, firewall configuration and logs. For serious compromises, reinstalling the OS and restoring only verified data is sometimes safer than continuing to trust the existing server.
